How Can I Help During the Coronavirus Pandemic?

ARTICLE

According to Business Insider, a total of 306.3 million people or about 95% of the US population have been issued a stay-at-home order. We are told that the most important thing we can do right now is to social distance, and we have been doing just that. Many of us wonder though, is there more that we can be doing?

Provide Aid to Healthcare Workers

One of the biggest issues right now for healthcare workers is the lack of equipment needed to protect themselves from the coronavirus, specifically face masks, isolation gowns, and examination gloves. Monetary donations as well as any medical equipment donations can be made.

Another way to help healthcare workers is by providing meals to them while on the job. There have even been groups who buy meals from local restaurants and donate those meals to healthcare workers!

Support Your Local Businesses

Since most everyone is cooped up in their houses, the need for services such as nannies, maids, hairdressers, tutors, and lawn services are no longer in demand. If you are financially able to keep paying them, try to. Social distancing is also leading to many people making dinner at home. If you want to support your local restaurants, see if they have a pickup option.

Donate Blood

According to Consumer Reports, the American Red Cross reports that almost 13,000 of its blood drives have been cancelled due to concerns regarding the coronavirus. This results in almost 375,000 fewer blood donations. If you are healthy, qualify as a donor, and want to donate blood, reach out to a Red Cross location near you.

Check in on Family, Friends, and Neighbors

With so much more free time on your hands, reach out to family, friends, and neighbors to see how they are doing and catch up. Especially for older individuals who are more at-risk of the virus, offer to go to the grocery store for them so they don’t have to leave their house.

Don’t Waste

USDA reports that Americans waste between 30% and 40% of food supply. With so many people stocking up on groceries during this time, it is very important to take precautionary measures when it comes to correctly storing your food. Store foods at the right temperature, freeze some foods for later, and try not to cook more food than you will eat each night for dinner!

Self-Care

Make sure to take care of yourself as well! Making smart decisions when deciding to go out of your home and ensuring your physical and mental health is a top priority is key to self-care during these times.
